What back-office automation revealed: Tasks only humans can handle

Image
In recent years, the advancement of digital transformation has led many companies to implement automation tools in their back-office operations. At K2 Staffing Solutions, we have also adopted technologies such as AI and ATS to improve efficiency, especially in repetitive and routine tasks. When we first started, we assumed that automation could handle the majority of our back-office work and would significantly reduce our manual workload. However, as we started discussing issues with engineers, we realized something quite different. While automation certainly improved efficiency in many areas, it also helped us identify what tasks cannot be replaced by technology. In fact, the automation process clearly revealed the boundaries between work that machines can do—and work that only humans can. What is Culture Fit? The Invisible Agent of Hiring For Long-Term

Image
The term ‘culture fit’ helps describe how much an employee or, in case of remote freelance teams, a teammate aligns with the company’s values, beliefs and goals. Organizational psychologist Adrian Furnham offers this definition in his textbook  The Psychology of Behaviour at Work,  “A fit is where there is congruence between the norms and values of the organization and those of the person.” Those considered a good culture fit have the necessary hard and soft skills that let them fit in the existing team and contribute. JPMorgan Rebrands DEI as DOI

Image
JPMorgan Chase is making a strategic shift in its diversity efforts, renaming its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) program to Diversity, Opportunity, and Inclusion (DOI). The change, outlined in an internal memo, swaps “equity” for “opportunity,” aligning with the bank’s emphasis on merit-based hiring and career advancement. As part of this transition, some DEI programs will now fall under other departments, such as HR and corporate responsibility, while training initiatives will be scaled back. However, employee resource groups will remain, continuing to foster engagement, cultural recognition, education, and historical awareness, according to Chief Operating Officer Jenn Piepszak. Piepszak explained that JPMorgan always viewed “equity” as ensuring equal opportunities, not equal outcomes. She emphasized that the revised approach better reflects the company’s commitment to reaching a broad client base, fostering an inclusive workplace, and expanding access to opportunities....

DOL seeks to cancel Trump-era rule on association health plans

Image
The Biden administration recently announced plans to scrap a 2018 rule introduced during Donald Trump’s presidency, aimed at broadening opportunities for certain employers to form association health plans. The 2018 rule, crafted by the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) under former President Trump, intended to establish additional criteria within the Employee Retirement Income Security Act. This was to determine when multiple employers could band together to sponsor a single multiemployer health plan. However, this rule faced legal opposition from several states, leading to a federal judge vacating and sending it back for review in 2019. According to a DOL press release, despite the rule never being fully enacted and no existing association health plans formed based on it, the administration seeks to address uncertainty. The goal is to reassess criteria for association health plan sponsors and ensure alignment with the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) through updated ...

OSHA Proposes New Rule to Shield Workers from Extreme Heat

Image
The Department of Labor has unveiled a proposed rule aimed at safeguarding millions of indoor and outdoor workers in the U.S. from extreme heat. This new regulation requires employers to establish a Heat Injury and Illness Prevention Plan to manage and mitigate heat-related hazards in the workplace. Key elements of the proposed rule include the need for employers to assess heat risks and implement measures such as providing drinking water, rest breaks, and controlling indoor temperatures. The rule also mandates specific plans for workers who are not accustomed to working in high heat. Once published in the Federal Register, the public will have the opportunity to submit written comments on the proposed rule. OSHA has indicated that a public hearing will follow the comment period to further discuss the rule. Since April 2022, OSHA has had a National Emphasis Program focused on heat safety. However, the proposed rule would create enforceable guidelines, replacing general recommenda...

The EEOC settles for $90,000 in an age discrimination case involving a 49-year-old applicant denied a sales position

Image
A molecular diagnostics company in Wisconsin has agreed to a $90,000 settlement following an allegation by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) of age discrimination against a 49-year-old job applicant. The lawsuit, filed by EEOC in March, claimed that Exact Sciences declined the applicant for a medical sales representative role, citing a preference for “more junior” candidates. According to EEOC, notes from a recruiting consultant indicated the applicant was overqualified. The company then hired a 41-year-old candidate with less experience than the plaintiff. As part of the settlement, Exact Sciences will introduce additional age discrimination training for hiring managers and ensure that third-party recruiters understand the policies against age bias in hiring. The company, however, maintains its stance, stating that the applicant wasn’t selected for legitimate, non-discriminatory business reasons. Despite the Age Discrimination in Employment Act’s provisions...
